I think it can be a good idea, although I personally would never share rooms with someone that I only communicated with online, nor would I share a room with someone who I met only once at a con or just met (I.e if someone at the con comes up to me and asks if they can stay in my room, I will say no).
I don't think it's dangerous in the sense that the person you are bringing in will hurt you or anything like that. However, it is dangerous in that you don't know what will make them angry, how neat or messy they are, whether they will search through your stuff while you are out of the room, whether they will *steal* your stuff, whether they will respect the hotel rules, etc.
If you do share a room with someone or find roommates through cosplay forums, you should come up with some sort of screening process. Nothing too formal, but make sure to PM the candidates with some ground rules that you have set and make sure that they can agree to those rules.
...Jones? Oh I think I will be avoiding him *hides jar of dirt*
As for legal matters, I am a pirate... those rules more like guidelines anyways
But in all seriousness, I don't believe that there are any real legal matters that will be brought up when sharing a room. Only thing that may come up is if you don't make your fair share of the payment or if there is underaged drinking in the room and you guys get caught. Usually before you share a room with someone, there is no legal contract or document involved. Only if an incident occurs will legal action be necessary.
Why thank you Jack! I feel a bit better about my roommates then. Why Jack, didn't Jones die before you left for Stranger Tides? Are you sure you need to keep a jar of dirt on you?
Yep. I'm sure...never know when it may become useful
Masterhavik - Koalatytime may have people in the room that they think will be fine, but you never really know people until you live with them. You can be great friends with someone, but that person can be awful to live with. I just say as a general rule, unless you have known your roommates for a while, it's probably not the best idea to room with them. You don't know if they will steal stuff from you while you are gone, what people they will bring back to the rooms, if they are going to respect the room etc. All manner of things can go wrong when you room with people you don't know.

I'm wondering if I need to speak to someone about the legal matters in sharing a room...
