First Time at a convention

Sorry if something similar has been asked. I have never been to a convention before and was really considering going alone this summer. I wanted to cosplay as Marin Kitagawa(im male). I am super nervous about attending. How accepting are people? Any tips on how to make friends? Any other advice? Thanks in advance
