1st(ish) Anime Midwest

Hello everyone! I'll be attending my 1st anime Midwest this year. I was at Anime Midwest a few years ago to see a friend's band that was performing, but I did not really stay for the con. I have been a longtime anime fan (like a 90's anime fan) but I never participated in anime cons until this year. I recently became interested in photography/videography and will be shooting at Anime Midwest. If you'd like your cosplay shot, just let me know, if our schedules work, I'll do it for free (just the practice). I'm not a pro, but I do promise I will do my best to make your photos as good looking I can. My Flickr albums: https://flic.kr/ps/uzUiu I am also one of the contributing writers for Kotaku's reader sub-blog, Ani-Tay, and feature some of my photographs on articles there: http://jonuiuc.kinja.com/ Hope to meet most of you!

Hello, I've looked through your most recent photos of ACEN 2014 and the quality of the pictures are really good! I like the way how the camera is tilted to take interesting shots and from different angles/distance from the cosplayers. Most of them were full body and self-portraits. Taking a closer look, you should work on getting the FULL cosplay in the pictures. Some photos already has the full body, but some are cut off either at the feet, weapons and props. You should keep an eye on that. And if you notice, some cosplayers' feet are in an 'L' shape (since I'm guessing that they might have seen the same guide on how to pose for a picture in cosplay guide to practice their pose for their cosplay) and it's also on the cosplayer(s) to pose for a good picture too. Good combos provided by the photographers and cosplayers at a convention will produce amazing shots, experience, and memories. What you're doing is developing and even self-portraits are fine too for that friendly essence of cosplay and fun as well as focus on the cosplayer(s) that are in the picture. Keep doing your best and hope to see more of your works!

Thanks for the advice leromun. I had not really thought in terms of capturing the "full cosplay" though it makes sense in hindsight that cosplayers would want all their work on the frame. I'll keep this in mind for the future. All my cosplay pics so far were pretty much just shot on the spot, so I look forward to having the opportunity to have more than a few seconds to snap a pic and work with cosplayers for a few minutes get the kind of pics they would love to be in. I try to shoot at least every weekend to get familiar with the camera and different lens options. I have my preferences a little more dialed in each week, and I'm excited to see how any Anime Midwest pics turn out.
